Sunny California

Oh California, I love you!  Especially in the middle of winter! I'll take 70 and sunny any day...but especially in February! We had a great trip to California visiting with family and friends and welcoming my parents home from Guatemala.  When we first arrived we decided to drive up the coast from my hometown and stay a few days out in Santa Barbara.  It is absolutely gorgeous there...we fell in love with their Spanish style architecture, their beautiful beaches and their vibrant downtown area.

  

A Day at the Met!

It had been a few months since we visited the Met...our last time was the day before our little girl came into the world!  It was fun to take her around this time...her eyes were constantly moving every which way.  She didn't want to miss any of the action and it was much more interesting for her than being in our apartment on a cold winter's day.  She's becoming quite the cultured baby in the city!

One of my favorite areas of the Met is the Carroll and Milton Petrie European Sculpture Court.  It really is incredible that real live people actually sculpted these masterpieces.  Every time I see such amazing sculptures I think back to my sculpture class in college.  After 40 plus hours working on chiseling away at a rock, and not being able to make it into much of anything, I gained a newfound respect for these amazing artists.

Cooper Hewitt Museum

The Cooper Hewitt is one of our favorite museums. They always have interesting exhibits and this one definitely stuck out to us. The exhibit Why Design Now showcased some of the most innovative designs at the center of contemporary culture.

One of my favorite designs was a camera for the blind that embossed the images they were viewing to allow them through touch to experience their surroundings more fully. Jeremiah's favorite was an oversized solar panel umbrella that could be used in deserts to collect energy and shade by day and shelter and illumination by night, when it was closed. If you're in the city we definitely recommend you visit this exhibit before it ends on jan 9th.
